Former U.S. President Donald Trump has declared a strategic approach toward Iran’s enriched uranium reserves, emphasizing their destruction either in the United States or at their current locations under the oversight of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This statement was made public on May 25 via Trump's social media platform, Truth Social.

Strategic Implications for Iran’s Nuclear Materials

Trump’s proposal involves two potential scenarios: the immediate transfer of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpiles to the United States for destruction, or their elimination on site or at another suitable location under IAEA supervision in coordination with Iranian officials. The preferred option, according to Trump, is the on-site destruction of uranium, which avoids the risks and complications associated with transportation.

Trump characterized the enriched uranium as “nuclear dust,” a term reflecting his previous aggressive posture toward Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, including references to U.S. military strikes. His approach underscores a continued hardline stance against Iran’s nuclear program.

"Destroying Iran’s enriched uranium reserves locally under IAEA supervision is preferable to avoid logistical risks," Trump stated, highlighting security priorities.

The context for this policy stance is the ongoing conflict that the U.S. and Israel have engaged in against Iran since February 28. The U.S. intelligence community estimates that Iran currently possesses over 440 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60% purity, far exceeding levels necessary for civilian nuclear energy applications.

This quantity and enrichment level present a theoretical window for rapid further enrichment to weapons-grade uranium (90%), raising strategic alarms among U.S. and allied decision-makers.

Despite these concerns, Iranian authorities have repeatedly denied any intention to develop nuclear weapons, asserting the peaceful nature of their nuclear program. However, they have issued warnings about escalating uranium enrichment in response to external military actions.

As of now, no formal agreements have been publicly confirmed by Tehran regarding the transfer or destruction of enriched uranium in coordination with the United States or third parties.

Business and Geopolitical Considerations

The proposed destruction or transfer of Iran’s enriched uranium carries significant implications for international relations and the global nuclear materials market. Any physical movement of uranium stockpiles involves complex logistics, strict regulatory compliance, and geopolitical risks, especially given the heightened tensions between Iran and Western powers.

From a corporate and strategic perspective, the handling of such nuclear materials often involves government contractors specializing in nuclear security, transportation, and disposal technologies. The potential for new contracts or international cooperation initiatives could arise if such an operation were approved and implemented.

Moreover, this development may influence the strategic calculations of energy and defense companies monitoring shifts in nuclear policy and regional security dynamics.
