On July 5, Russian forces launched a series of aerial attacks on several Ukrainian regions, employing air-dropped bombs, rockets, and drones, according to local authorities. The strikes hit key urban centers including Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia, resulting in four fatalities and 25 injuries across multiple locations.

Scope and Impact of the Attacks

The assaults occurred throughout the day and evening, targeting urban and civilian infrastructure across Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Kherson, Izyum, Bohodukhiv, and Chernihiv regions. Local officials have reported significant destruction to residential buildings and critical logistical facilities, highlighting the broad scope of disruption inflicted by these strikes.

In Zaporizhzhia, the regional military administration head Ivan Fedorov confirmed that two aerial bombs struck the city. The attacks damaged numerous private houses and 35 apartments within a multi-story building. Among the casualties was a 14-year-old teenager and an 89-year-old woman, both suffering from shrapnel wounds and concussive trauma. The strikes caused one death and 13 injuries, underscoring the direct human impact of the offensive.

Kherson was also targeted early in the morning, where two individuals sustained injuries, including a 44-year-old man diagnosed with blast trauma and shrapnel wounds to his arm. The Chernihiv region experienced damage to a sorting center operated by the "Nova Poshta" postal service, disrupting logistics and communications.

Additional casualties were reported in the Kharkiv region. Bohodukhiv city saw two deaths and two injuries after Russian strikes, according to regional authorities. In Izyum, a rocket attack resulted in one fatality and injuries to three women who were hospitalized. Infrastructure damage included the destruction of a gas station building and damage to multiple vehicles.

Kharkiv city itself endured two attacks in one day. The morning strike targeted a gas station via drone, followed by a subsequent hit later in the day. Casualties included three women, a man, and an 18-year-old girl, all requiring hospitalization after sustaining blast injuries.

"The threat of drone attacks persisted across Zaporizhzhia region until at least 20:58 local time," said Ivan Fedorov, emphasizing the ongoing risk to civilians and infrastructure.

Strategic and Security Implications

These attacks come amid heightened intelligence warnings from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who cited potential for massive new strikes by Russian forces. Notably, shortly after his warning, Kyiv experienced the most intense bombardment since the onset of the conflict on July 2, resulting in dozens of casualties.

The increased targeting of civilian infrastructure, including gas stations, postal sorting centers, and residential areas, suggests a strategic attempt to disrupt logistics, civilian mobility, and morale. Regional governors have urged caution, with Sumy Oblast head Oleh Hryhorov advising residents to avoid gas stations due to the threat of further attacks, reflecting concerns over vulnerabilities in critical supply chains.

These developments underline the evolving nature of the conflict, where Russian forces continue to apply pressure on Ukrainian urban centers, complicating both civilian safety and governmental response efforts. The impact on transportation hubs and logistical infrastructure may also have long-term implications for Ukraine's economic resilience and administrative functions in affected regions.
