In a closely contested runoff election held on June 21, Abelardo de la Espriella, a hard-right businessman, emerged victorious over leftist candidate Iván Cepeda to become Colombia’s next president. With approximately 99% of votes counted, de la Espriella secured 49.65% of the vote, narrowly edging out Cepeda who received 48.70%. De la Espriella is expected to assume office on August 7, succeeding outgoing President Gustavo Petro, who was ineligible for re-election.

Strategic Shift in Colombia’s Corporate and Security Policies

De la Espriella’s platform centers on robust measures to combat armed groups involved in drug trafficking through enhanced military operations. His campaign advocated for the construction of large-scale prisons modeled after facilities in El Salvador, emphasizing a hardline law enforcement approach. The businessman also proposes significant economic deregulation, aiming to foster a more favorable environment for business and investment in Colombia.

In contrast, Cepeda, representing the ruling left-wing party 'Historic Pact,' promoted extensive social reforms focused on addressing inequality and social welfare. The election outcome thus represents a potential pivot away from Petro’s progressive agenda toward a more market-friendly and security-oriented government.

“Abelardo de la Espriella’s administration is expected to prioritize deregulation and a militarized approach to tackling Colombia’s entrenched security challenges.”

De la Espriella’s victory was backed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who publicly endorsed the ultraright candidate during the campaign. Trump hailed de la Espriella’s win as a significant triumph on the social media platform Truth Social. Additionally, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulated the president-elect via social media and a personal call, signaling intent for close bilateral cooperation.

Rubio emphasized that the Trump administration looks forward to collaborating with Colombia’s incoming government to strengthen regional security cooperation, curb illegal immigration to the United States, and deepen economic ties. “The best days for Colombia are still ahead,” Rubio declared.

Geopolitical and Economic Context

The election takes place against a backdrop of strained U.S.-Colombia relations under President Petro, whose administration was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury in October 2025. Sanctions targeted Petro, his family members, and Colombia’s interior minister Armando Benedetti, citing allegations of allowing drug cartels to flourish. Petro’s son was also accused of receiving campaign funds from an alleged drug trafficker.

Following the sanctions, Petro organized protests in Bogotá against U.S. policies, which included military interventions targeting Colombian vessels suspected of drug trafficking in the Caribbean. These operations reportedly resulted in the destruction of 10 boats and at least 43 casualties over two months. Petro also criticized U.S. support for Israel, adding further tension to bilateral relations.

In response, Trump labeled Petro a “bandit” and withdrew U.S. support for Colombia’s anti-drug trafficking efforts during his tenure.

De la Espriella’s forthcoming administration is expected to recalibrate Colombia’s foreign and economic policies, potentially restoring closer ties with the United States and pursuing a more aggressive approach toward security and economic deregulation. These strategic decisions will likely have significant implications for Colombia’s business climate and regional security dynamics.
