Following the European ban on the Russian state-backed broadcaster Russia Today (RT), its former head of the French branch, Ksenia Fedorova, has continued her career in French media by joining the conservative television channel CNews. This strategic move highlights the shifting dynamics within French media and the interplay of political allegiances influencing corporate decisions in the broadcasting sector.

Strategic Career Shift Amid Media Sanctions

After RT's operations were prohibited across Europe, Fedorova leveraged her residency in France to secure a position at CNews, a channel known for its right-wing conservative stance. At CNews, she hosts Lumières orthodoxes ("Orthodox Lights"), a program dedicated to exploring the role and influence of Orthodox churches across Europe. Additionally, she contributes to international news commentary on Europe 1 radio's program L'Heure Inter.

Her programming and commentary have maintained a clear pro-Kremlin orientation. In May, for instance, Fedorova attributed the origins of Russia's military actions in Ukraine to NATO's eastward expansion and criticized the West for prolonging the conflict through failed negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow in 2022. These views are consistent with her previous editorial direction at RT France.

Corporate and Political Connections Facilitating Transition

Fedorova's transition to CNews was reportedly facilitated by her connections with the channel's owner, Vincent Bolloré, a prominent French businessman with a record of supporting far-right political figures, including Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Rally party.

"Fedorova and several former RT France colleagues secured roles at CNews, likely aided by her perceived closeness to channel owner Vincent Bolloré," reports indicated, underscoring the intertwining of corporate strategy and political alliances.

Bolloré's media empire has been noted for fostering conservative viewpoints, reflecting his political leanings and reinforcing CNews's positioning within France's competitive broadcast landscape. This alliance suggests a calculated corporate strategy aimed at consolidating a particular ideological narrative within French media, capitalizing on the expertise and audience base of displaced RT personnel.

The movement of media professionals like Fedorova from a banned foreign state broadcaster to a domestic conservative outlet illustrates the complexities of media ownership, political influence, and regulatory environments. It raises questions about content governance, editorial independence, and the challenges faced by European media markets in balancing freedom of expression with geopolitical considerations.

As French audiences consume Fedorova's programming, media analysts will closely monitor how these corporate and political dynamics shape public discourse and competitive positioning in the country's broadcast sector.
