In the early hours of July 25, several Russian cities, including Belgorod, the administrative center of Belgorod Oblast, and Rostov-on-Don, experienced drone strikes that resulted in fires and infrastructure damage. According to independent Ukrainian monitoring group Exilenova, the drone strikes hit critical logistics warehouses as well as key energy infrastructure in Belgorod, including the Southern substation and the Luсh combined heat and power plant. Additionally, a significant fire broke out at the Engels airbase in Saratov Oblast during the same night. Exilenova suspects the site of the fire to be the headquarters of the 22nd Guards Heavy Bomber Aviation Division, a key Russian strategic bomber unit that operates the Tu-95MS missile carriers.

“The Engels airfield has repeatedly been targeted by drone attacks since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion, with confirmed damage to strategic bombers used in attacks on Ukraine,” noted ASTRA, an independent project analyzing eyewitness footage.

Despite the fire’s proximity to military infrastructure, local authorities have not confirmed that the blaze resulted from a drone strike. Residents reported no drone activity, suggesting the possibility of an accidental fire. Yet, just prior to the incident, a drone threat alert was issued in the Saratov region, adding complexity to the incident’s interpretation.

The Engels airbase has been a recurrent target, with a prior confirmed drone attack on July 16 damaging a Tu-95MS bomber. This continued targeting underscores Ukraine’s tactical approach to neutralizing Russian strategic bombing capabilities by attacking their deployment points.
