CSU Leader Advocates for Germany-Ukraine Agreement on Advanced Drone Technology Transfer

Alexander Hoffmann, chairman of the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU) parliamentary group in the Bundestag, has called for Ukraine to transfer its cutting-edge combat drone technologies to Germany. Hoffmann stressed the importance of a formal intergovernmental agreement between Germany and Ukraine to facilitate this exchange, aiming to bolster German defense capabilities.

Strategic Rationale Behind the Technology Transfer Proposal

The CSU is part of Germany's ruling coalition alongside the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD). Hoffmann highlighted that Ukraine has achieved "truly outstanding capabilities" in drone warfare, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), anti-drone defense systems, and cruise missiles. He emphasized that Germany’s continued support for Kyiv should yield reciprocal benefits, specifically in military technology sharing.

"We want to oblige Ukraine to share this experience with us so that together we can become stronger," Hoffmann said, underlining the strategic value of joint innovation.

By obtaining access to Ukrainian innovations, the German Bundeswehr would be able to enhance its own defense and deterrence measures. Hoffmann warned that rapid scaling of drone production capabilities is necessary to respond effectively to evolving security challenges.

He stated, "We say that Germany must participate in these weapons innovations to strengthen its defenses and deterrence. Therefore, we call for an intergovernmental agreement with Kyiv, obliging the Ukrainian side to share its technological capabilities with us." This approach reflects a broader trend of aligning military-industrial partnerships with geopolitical alliances.

Hoffmann reiterated Berlin's commitment to supporting Ukraine "under all circumstances," but stressed that support should be coupled with tangible dividends that reinforce Germany’s military preparedness and technological edge.

The proposal underscores an emerging competitive landscape in European defense technology, where collaboration in drone systems and related innovations could determine strategic advantages.
