Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, is poised to approve the nomination of Sergey Koretsky as the new prime minister, marking a pivotal shift in the country's executive leadership. The announcement was made by parliamentary speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk on July 16, following President Volodymyr Zelensky's official presentation of Koretsky for the post.
Strategic Government Transition and Cabinet Overhaul
This nomination comes shortly after the Verkhovna Rada accepted the resignation of former Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko on July 14. Svyrydenko, who led the Ukrainian government since July 17, 2025, stepped down along with the entire Cabinet, paving the way for a comprehensive government renewal.
Initially, four candidates were under consideration for the premiership: Sergey Koretsky, chairman of the state energy company Naftogaz; Denis Shmyhal, Ukraine's Minister of Energy; Mykhailo Fedorov, Minister of Defense; and Ihor Terekhov, mayor of Kharkiv. After extensive consultations, President Zelensky identified Koretsky as the most suitable candidate to lead the government forward, particularly in a period demanding strong economic and energy sector management.
"After all consultations, President Zelensky considers Sergey Koretsky the most appropriate candidate for prime minister," stated the parliamentary speaker.
The Verkhovna Rada plans to formally approve Koretsky's appointment along with the new Cabinet composition on July 16. The reshuffle notably includes the replacement of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov with Ihor Klimenko, who currently leads the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Subsequently, Ivan Vyhovsky is expected to be appointed as the new head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
In contrast to these changes, Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha will retain his position, ensuring continuity in Ukraine's diplomatic affairs.
